Japan's Super Expensive Seasonal Watermelons

You can expect to pay a premium for fruit in Japan, but this takes things to a whole new level! The season's first Raiden watermelons fetched a sweet price at an auction in northern Japan, going for a staggering ¥300,000.

Kyowa is a town in Hokkaido known for growing the pricey melons. Farmers say weather conditions since April made sweeter and larger fruit than usual, and that factors included the temperature difference between night and day and lack of rain since April. Peak season for these watermelons runs from the end of June until early July.
