Morning Market & Morning Ramen

Morning Market & Morning Ramen

In the morning, we headed to the Sendai Asaichi (仙台朝市), or Sendai Morning Market. This market has almost anything you can think of, from fresh fruit and scrumptious cooked foods to clothing and gifts, all at very reasonable prices.

I just couldn't believe the prices of these vegetables. In Tokyo, we would be very lucky to find such deals for this farm-to-table freshness. After we passed all the veggies, we made out way through the seafood market, where we saw even more shirako (yay) and various kinds of fish.

My biggest surprise was seeing the same kind of fish I'd won the night before in the auction, magarei or brown sole, for only ¥500! I cannot complain at all, though, because the ¥2,030 we paid included the cleaning, cutting, cooking and the fun of making new friends.

For our last meal on our tour, our helpful Sendai City Hall guide had a tasty surprise for us for lunch. The shop, called Suehiro Ramen, is well known for its long queues, and we were lucky to only wait about 15 minutes to get a seat.

And it was definitely worth the wait. You can understand why people stand outside daily waiting for a chance to grab a bowl of ramen here. The stock was thick and hearty, with a healthy portion of meat for the carnivores, and all the chopped green onion you could handle—all this for less than US$10.

Sadly, it was only 11 a.m.—because an icy cold beer would've made the perfect pairing with the slightly salty soy sauce broth and the thick noodles. Perhaps next time, because there's so much more food to enjoy in region. I am quite sure I'll be back soon to taste Tohoku!
