Mandarin Oranges Fetch Record High Price

An original variety of oranges grown in western Japan fetched a record high 100,000 yen (about US$935) apiece at the first auction of the season for Obarabeniwase mandarins, which took place at Takamatsu City Central Wholesale Market.

The greenhouse-grown citrus fruit is known for its deep orange color and sweetness. The price for a box of 25 highest-quality oranges came to 2.58 million yen (US$24,000). They weighed about 550 kilograms (about 1,200 pounds). The shipment of the mandarins will run through early August.
