Dance Above the Tokyo Skyline: An Apothecary Diaries Event at Roppongi Hills

Tokyo City View, the observation deck at the Roppongi Hills complex, has traded its usual skyline for a stage set. A collaboration event with the TV anime The Apothecary Diaries turns the deck’s window-lined corridor into a dance venue, mixing video projection, three-dimensional displays, and photo spots with the city itself as a backdrop.

The Apothecary Diaries follows Maomao, a young woman versed in medicine and poison, as she applies her knowledge and her instinct for observation to a string of mysteries inside an imperial rear palace. The court intrigue is matched by a cast of characters distinctive enough to have built the series a devoted following.
This event narrows in on one part of that world: the striking dance sequences that run through the story. Video and physical staging rebuild them scene by scene, and the result holds up as a visual experience even for visitors who have never watched an episode.

The View as Backdrop
The entrance sets the terms of the event: a large screen plays Maomao’s Dance, and beyond it, through Tokyo City View’s wide windows, the city itself continues the scene. Daylight brings blue sky; after dark, the same windows fill with city lights. Either way, the skyline isn’t scenery here—it’s staging.

Step Into the Scene
A Maomao statue—on public display in Japan for the first time—stands in front of a reconstructed apothecary’s shelf, set up as a photo spot. In the theater space, an original short themed on Loulan’s Dance plays across three screens with full surround sound.
The rest of the route works through an entrance modeled on the imperial court, displays on medicinal herbs and poisons, and a set piece recreating the scene in which Maomao names the moon goddess. Smaller details are folded in throughout for visitors closely tracking the series.

Goods and Audio Guide
The pop-up shop sells event-exclusive original goods: clear files, stickers, T-shirts, tumblers, and a set of square sticky-notes. New items are added monthly during the run.
A special audio guide narrated by Aoi Yuki (Maomao) and Takeo Otsuka (Jinshi), is available on Spotify, with a look back at the series and a short voice drama. Ticket holders who show their ticket at the merchandise counter receive a randomly selected limited-edition character card (one per person; while supplies last).

Tokyo City View occupies the 52nd floor of Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, 250 meters above sea level, with panoramic views including Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree. Roppongi’s streets and restaurants are a short walk away for anyone looking to make a day of it.
