Kirin Brewery announced Japan’s first zero-carbohydrate beer, hitting the shelves on October 6. The product is part of the beer maker’s flagship Ichiban brand series that uses only the first press of malt.

Zero-carb versions of similar products like low-malt beer are already on the market. But removing carbs from regular beer was considered difficult. Kirin spent five years developing a new fermentation technology to create a no-carb beer while retaining its savor.

The company is targeting health-conscious consumers as people who stay home amid the coronavirus pandemic are growing concerned about gaining weight.
