Toyota to Allow Permanent Work From Home

Officials at Toyota Motor say they will allow many of its workers to permanently work from home. In an effort to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, the carmaker has granted special permission to employees who were not eligible to work remotely so they would not have to commute to their offices.

But Toyota’s management discovered that these employees were more productive working remotely due in part to the reduction in commuting time.

Employees eligible to permanently work from home will include those in clerical and engineer positions, and those who are raising children or caring for their elderly parents.

Toyota officials hope that not having to commute will create a better working environment and allow workers to realize a healthy work life balance.

The automaker is also considering allowing some factory technicians to work remotely.

It plans to implement the new measures beginning in September.
