NTT Developing Automatic Checkout App
As retailers in Japan struggle with staff shortages, NTT Data Corporation has come up with a new system that enables shopping without going through a cash register.
By NIPPON TV NEWS 24 JAPANCustomers install an app on their smartphone, register necessary information and then scan a QR code at the store entrance. Once in the store, they simply pick up the items they want and leave. Cameras set up on ceilings and sensors on shelves determine which merchandise has been taken.
Shoppers are automatically charged via the application, which also displays a receipt. NTT Data aims to have the system in place at 1,000 retail shops by the end of March 2023.
