Tourists Flock for a Glimpse of Old Japan

It's no secret that Japan's rich history is deeply tied to its culture, even now. Visitors are eager to get a glimpse of that history, which is why townscapes that have managed to preserve that retro ambiance—like Kawagoe, which is just outside Tokyo—are increasingly popular tourist destinations.

280,000 foreign tourists visited Kawagoe last year. While that number may not seem staggering in and of itself, that was a more than 40% rise since 2017.

Hikers and history enthusiasts have also been exploring the historic Nakasendo trade route. International travelers to the area as increased about five-fold in the past decade.
