With the government set to debut redesigned banknotes in 2024, the National Printing Bureau decided to reveal—for the first time ever—how paper money is made in Japan.

There are only four money printing plants in Japan, with one centrally located in Tokyo. Only 10 craftsmen in the country have the skills necessary to engrave the bill plates used for printing money, and their carving abilities are so sophisticated that the printing machinery actually can't match the intricate detail of their designs.
