There are certainly a (surprising!) number of impressive Buddha statues in Japan, many of them claiming to be the tallest, oldest or even heaviest of their type. But at 120 meters (390 ft), Ibaraki Prefecture's Ushiku Daibutsu was certified the tallest statue in the world until 2002, when it was overtaken by the Spring Temple Buddha in Lushan, China.
