Snow Crab Season Starts in Central Japan

The snow crab season kicked off in Fukui Prefecture on the Sea of Japan on November 5.

48 boats left Echizen Port and put out their nets. Roughly an hour later, they caught heaps of Echizen-gani, a snow crab the area is famous for. The shellfish is a seasonal delicacy. It attracts many tourists to the area once the fishing season begins.

Fishing of the male crabs will run through next March. Officials hope it will revitalize the fishing town hard-hit by the ongoing coronavirus epidemic.
