Farming

Emperor Naruhito harvested rice from Imperial Palace paddies for the first time since ascending in May. His grandfather, Emperor Showa, started the tradition.

The Emperor used a new sickle to cut 100 stalks. Varieties include “Nihon Masakari” and sticky “Mangetsu Mochi.” Emperor Emeritus Akihito planted the rice seeds before he abdicated.

The grains will be used in imperial rites and events at Ise Jingu shrine.
