Tokyo Island Emitting High Volume Volcanic Gas
Japan Coast Guard officials say active eruptions continue on Nishinoshima, part of the Ogasawara Islands about 1,000 kilometers south of central Tokyo.
By NIPPON TV NEWS 24 JAPANAdding, while the flow of lava has temporarily stopped, massive amounts of volcanic gas continues to be released. Officials said white smoke billowed from a crater at the summit to a height of 3,000 meters. Footage from August 13th shows Nishinoshima spewing a large amount of volcanic ash and lava.
An expert said stagnated magma in shallow underground areas is causing the emission of volcanic gas, and lava flow could occur again in the future.
