Tokyo Hits Record High for New COVID Cases

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government confirmed 224 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus on Thursday, July 9.

The figure surpassed the previous single-day record of 206 on April 17. The number of new confirmed cases had dropped to 75 on Wednesday after six straight days of going above 100.

Tokyo’s Shinjuku Ward that hosts many nightlife venues has been proactively testing residents as infections are spreading in such facilities. Officials tested 3,129 people on Monday, the largest number for a day in Tokyo.
