The 71st annual Sapporo Snow Festival kicked off on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, in Hokkaido, the northernmost prefecture of Japan.

119 snow and ice sculptures are on display at the Odori Park venue. Highlights include projection mapping and a sculpture of Michael Leitch, captain of Japan’s rugby team. A record 2.7 million people attended the event last year.

But this year, the warmer-than-usual winter and lack of snow could keep attendance low, as could concerns over coronavirus. Hand sanitizer was available across the 3 venues. The Sapporo Snow Festival will run through February 11.
