If living in the city has left you feeling the landlocked blues, fear not, because Japan is in fact an archipelago surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. A mere day trip from Tokyo, Chiba holds a host of activities for any ocean lover. Below are our top six!

6. Go Fishing

Fishing is a hugely popular pastime in Japan. If you'd like to get in on the action, you might want to check out the seas around Katsuura, Chiba. All year round you can aim for horse mackerel, flounder, snapper and whiting, while August to December brings big challenges with big fish like amberjack, kingfish, yellowtail and Japanese bonito. January through July sees the water teeming with squid, grunt, and snapper. No gear? No problem! Tours are available that will set you up! Beginners are welcome, with helpful staff ready to meet your needs.

5. Go Body Boarding

If surfing the big waves intimidates you, why not try out body boarding! This kid-friendly, senior-friendly, family friendly activity is a great way to catch some (albeit smaller) waves, enjoy the ocean, and spend a day with your toes in the sand. Anyone can feel the thrill of riding a wave!

4. Enjoy a Relaxing (or Romantic!) Cruise

Feel the comfortable Pacific Ocean sea breeze as you cruise around. If you head to calm Katsuura Bay, you can stop in at the largest underwater observation tower in East Asia and get a fish-eye view! The bay is known for its natural beauty, and this is a perfect and relaxing ocean getaway spot!

3. Go Scuba Diving

Did you know you could go scuba diving not far from Tokyo? There are a number of hot spots in Chiba with stunning turquoise waters. Never dived before? Feel the amazing sense of breathing underwater for the first time with a full-day beginners' scuba diving trip! You can also take certification courses, or if you're already certified, there are plenty of places to head out and explore! Don't forget your underwater camera!

2. Go Surfing

Grab your wetsuit and hit the beaches! Chiba's famed as the birthplace of surfing in Japan, and with its long east coast facing the Pacific, there's little wonder as to why! If you're new to the area—or you've never surfed before!—you can let an instructor guide you to some of the best local surfing spots, only a prefecture away from from Tokyo. Enjoy playing in the sea all day and riding the the waves, or simply relaxing on the beach.

1. Try Kiteboarding

What's even faster than surfing? Catch the wind in your kite and race over the water! You can even book a tour and have attentive instructors teach you about the gear and get you riding, then give you tips for smoother runs.
