New Godzilla Trailer is a Whole Lot of Shaky
Shin Gojira, or Godzilla Resurgence, will debut at the end of July 2016, becoming the first Japan-made Godzilla film since 2004's Godzilla: Final Wars.
The new effort is directed by Hideaki Anno, creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Shinji Higuchi, who directed the two live-action Attack on Titan films—which may be a plus, or a King Ghidorah-sized premonition of doom.
This isn't Anno's first venture into live action: he also directed the unusual Love & Pop in 1998, as well as 2004's uneven Cutie Honey live-action adaptation. Written by Anno, Shin Gojira will be the 31st Godzilla film overall, and the 29th produced by Toho Studios.
The first teaser trailer offers a whole lot of Cloverfield-style shaky-cam without any sight of the titular kaiju, which impies that Anno and Higuchi are going down a more serious path than previous installments—leaving the rest, for now, to our imaginations.
