A J-Punk/Metal Ode to Noodles

Tenkaippin is a massive ramen chain with hundreds of shops all over Japan, as well as a single branch in Hawaii. Its fans include Tokyo-based punk/metal band CANTOY, which penned the track Tenkaippin to describe the life-affirming qualities of its favorite noodle chain.

The fully subtitled lyrics include a perfunctory nod to the chain’s history, as well as shout-outs to its chicken soup-based Kotteri Ramen and the “hidden potential” of the chicken soup/soy sauce-based Assari Ramen.

This isn’t the band’s only food-based song, however. CANTOY—which seems to run on the image of being perpetually drunk—also extols the virtues of Asahi Super Dry beer in Super Drive.

In Japan since 2001, I'm a former ALT trainer who's lived in Shizuoka, Saitama and Tokyo, and visited 34 of Japan's 47 prefectures (13 to go!). When I can get out from behind the editorial desk, I take photos, do bits of theater and practice German longsword.
