Subway operator Tokyo Metro showed how safety gates are installed on a station platform. After train services ended after 1 A-M on December 12, about 50 workers began the task at Ueno Station on the Hibiya Line.

The workers took about 90 minutes to set up 35 gates on one side of the platform. Tokyo Metro plans to install platform screen doors and gates at all 180 stations by March 2026.

Railway operators are struggling to secure time and manpower for setting up as well as inspecting and maintaining new facilities such as these gates within the overnight hours when trains are not in service.

They plan to move up the time of last trains and start the day’s first trains later from next spring.
