Saikai Bridge

Saikai Bridge

Saikai Bridge

Between Saikai city and Sasebo city, Nagasaki Prefecture

Built in 1955, the bridge was built with a total length of 316 meters, and 43 meters above sea level. At the time it was built, the bridge was the largest arched bridge in East Asia, and the third largest in all of the world. Especially interesting to see is one of Japan's major rapid tides, Harioseto rapids as well as the whirling tides. The tides from the large Omura Bay converging on the only 200-meter-wide Harioseto creates a truly magnificent sight. The large and rapid tides during spring and fall are especially splendid. During "Uzushio Matsuri" in March and April, more than 1,000 cherry blossom trees bloom, so tourists can enjoy both the flowers in full bloom and the magnificent whirling tides.
