Increasing numbers of tourists have been participating in what's been dubbed "Holy Land Pilgrimages": visiting the real-world settings of popular anime series.

Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture is popular not only for its hot springs, but also for its connection to Neon Genesis Evangelion. Meanwhile, Saitama Prefecture saw a ¥2.2 million tourism boost thanks to Lucky Star. And now the government is actively trying to cash in on the phenomenon.
